  In the past, summer interns have identified in the course of their work hundreds of historical, literary, artistic, cinematic and musical gems, representing the Library’s rich cultural, creative and intellectual assets. During the 10-week paid internship (May 28-Aug. 2), the interns will inventory, catalog, arrange, preserve and research a backlog of copyright or special-collections material in many different formats in various divisions. The focus of the program is on increasing access to the Library’s collections and raising awareness of the Library’s digital-preservation programs by making them better-known and accessible to members of Congress and researchers, including scholars, students, teachers and the general public.

  She was selected as Teacher-in-Residence in part based on her use of the Library’s Lewis Hines collection of photographs in a sixth-grade language arts project on Charles Dickens’ novel “Oliver Twist.” Each Teacher-in-Residence undertakes a project to benefit his or her home school or district to be implemented during the following academic year. For her project, Newland will plan and facilitate half-day workshops for teacher/librarian pairs who will then develop and team-teach a collaborative lesson using Library primary sources. “The librarian has expertise in research skills while the teacher brings subject-area expertise to focus the lesson on an area of the curriculum that lends itself to the inclusion of primary sources,” Newland said.

 Science historian Steven J. Dick on Nov. 1 begins his term as the second Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology in the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. He will be in residence for one year. A well-known astronomer and author, Dick was the chair in aerospace history at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum and served as the chief historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 2003 to 2009. Dick will examine the historical background of astrobiology, and will work both individually and with other scholars to analyze humanistic issues surrounding the discovery of life in the universe and optimal approaches to studying the impact of such a discovery.

 Fleisig, a practicing architect in New York, won the prize for his HAER measured drawing of the Turn-of-River Bridge in Stamford, Conn. Built in 1893 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Co. in Berlin, Conn., the bridge is a rare lenticular type. Fleisig had learned of this type of bridge from professor Daniel Schodek while documenting other New England bridges with him for HAER in the early 1990s. Little documentation had been done on the lenticulars in the intervening years, and discovering the Holland Prize, Fleisig found that the single-sheet format was ideal for delineating the beauty and clarity of the small and simple structure.

 It was Lawrence Ritter’s great love and reverence for baseball that prompted him to travel for five years and over 75,000 miles interviewing professional ballplayers from the early years of the game. His 1966 book, “The Glory of Their Time: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It,” was based on interviews Ritter conducted with such greats as Smoky Joe Wood, Chief Meyers, Sam Crawford, Rube Marquard, Babe Herman and Bill Wambsganss, among others. Happy 100th day of school shirt

 The series continues on Oct. 1 with “Father of the Refugees” (58 minutes), another film in the trilogy “Between a Star and a Crescent,” directed by Bok. The film centers on the mysterious death of Charles Jordan, a top American Jewish official who was to present his groundbreaking plan to rehabilitate Palestinian refugees to the United Nations a week after his death. Jordan’s drowning in Prague in 1967—two months after Israel’s stunning victory over several Arab armies in the 1967 Six-Day War—remains a mystery. On Oct. 29, Georgetown University students and alumni will present “Glimpses of Kafka’s Fiction and Memoirs for the Stage” directed by Georgetown faculty in Theater and Performance Studies.

This lyrical drama was added to the National Film Registry in December 2014. Andrew Simpson will provide live musical accompaniment for the program, which will also include the National Film Registry comedy short “One Week,” starring Buster Keaton.
