Davies was a recipient of the 2005 NASA Software of the Year Award for his work on spacecraft autonomy, and is the author of “Volcanism on Io—A Comparison with Earth,”

 The Library’s newly established Dina Koston and Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music honors the life and legacy of noted composer and pianist Dina Koston, known for her integrity as a performer and presenter. With Leon Fleisher, she co-founded and co-directed the Theater Chamber Players (1968-2003), the first resident chamber ensemble of the Smithsonian Institution, and later, the first resident chamber ensemble of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Koston received commissions from The Library of Congress, the Wolf Trap Foundation, the Elaine Kaufman Cultural Center and The Cygnus Ensemble. Her works have been performed at Tanglewood and other major musical centers.

The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) in the Library of Congress administers the talking-book and braille program, a free library service available to residents of the United States and its territories and American citizens living abroad whose low vision, blindness, or physical handicap makes reading regular print difficult. Through its national network of regional libraries, NLS mails digital audio players and books and magazines -- in audio and in braille -- directly to enrollees at no cost. Music instructional materials are available in large-print, braille, and recorded formats. Select materials are also available online for download.

The John Adams Building is directly behind the Jefferson Building to the east on Second St. S.E. The James Madison Memorial Building, at 101 Independence Ave. S.E., is just south of the Jefferson Building. The papers of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Byron R. White, which are expected to add to knowledge of the court’s interpretation of constitutional law over three decades, are open to research through the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress.

 Kansas and raised in Chicago. She published more than 20 books of poetry during her lifetime, as well as several works of fiction and autobiography. In 1950 she became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize, and in 1985 the first African-American woman to serve as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, a position now known as U.S. Poet Laureate. Dargan is the author of three collections of poetry, most recently “Logorrhea Dementia: A Self-Diagnosis.” His honors include the Cave Canem Prize and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. He is the founding editor of the online magazine Post No Ills. He is a professor of literature at American University in Washington, D.C.

David has won several Grammy Awards; he also has received the Presidential Award from the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and the B'Nai B'rith Creative Achievement Award. As a recipient of the Ivor Novello Award, he became the first American to achieve that honor. In 1996 he and Burt Bacharach received the coveted Johnny Mercer Award from the national Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2011, the Hall also presented David with its Visionary Leadership Award.

 10. “The Indians for Indians Hour” (March 25, 1947) Originated by Don Whistler (a.k.a. Chief Kesh-Ke-Kosh), radio show “The Indians for Indians Hour” aired on the University of Oklahoma’s WNAD in Norman, Okla., from 1941 until 1985. It was a weekly venue for Native American music and cultural exchange featuring guests and music from 18 tribes reached by the station’s signal, including Apaches, Arapahos, Caddos, Cheyennes, Choctaws, Comanches, Kaws, Kiowas, Osages, Otos, Pawnees, Poncas, Seminoles, Shawnees and Wichitas. Whistler allowed only Indian music and had no non-Indian guests unless they worked for Indian Services.

 These photographs are part of Highsmith’s This Is America! project, which will document America state by state over the next 15 years. Highsmith completed her first state, Alabama, in 2010, with the financial support of George F. Landegger, who also funded her work in Washington D.C. and Connecticut. Highsmith, who has documented American life and architecture for more than 30 years, began donating her life’s work to the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress in 1992. The collection is expected to grow to more than 100,000 photographs covering all of the United States.

"The Civil War in America" will be free and open to the public, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, from Nov. 12, 2012, to June 1, 2013, in the Southwest Exhibition Gallery of the Thomas Jefferson Building at 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the James Madison Council. Additional funding is provided by Union Pacific Corporation, the Liljenquist family and AARP.
