 The Library of Congress is offering its fourth annual free workshop to help members of the public learn more about handling, cleaning, preserving and storing these valuable materials. The first preservation awareness workshop, held in 1996, proved so successful, with more than 600 people in attendance, that the Library's Preservation Directorate decided to make the workshop an annual event. Once again, the general public will have an opportunity to view demonstrations and gather information from conservators and other specialists at the Library of Congress on April 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No reservations are necessary. This year the workshop will be held in the Librarian's Reception Room, LJ 119, in the northwest corner of the first floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, with presentations taking place in the Coolidge Auditorium, on the ground floor of the Jefferson Building.

 The Library of Congress Humanities and Social Sciences Division provides reference service and collection development in the Main, Local History and Genealogy, Business and Microform reading rooms, and sponsors lectures in the arts, humanities and social sciences. The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading and libraries. Its program, which is supported mostly by private funds, reaches into every region of the country through a network of 36 affiliated state centers and more than 50 national educational and civic organizations. The Black Leadership Forum is a 20-year confederation of the top national civil rights and service organizations. As executive director of the group, Dr. Scruggs-Leftwich facilitates dialogue among African-American leaders and designs opportunities for collaboration across racial lines on issues important to the community.

 The Coolidge Auditorium is located in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress, First Street and Independence Avenue S.E. Admired internationally for his interpretations of Baroque music, Rinaldo Alessandrini has won distinguished prizes for his recordings of madrigals by Monteverdi, Marenzio, and Frescobaldi, including the Grand Prix de la Nouvelle Academie du Disque, the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, the Choc de la Musique, Diapason d'or, the Gramophone Editor's Choice, the BBC Music Magazine Prize, and the Premio Vivaldi della Fondazioni Cini. Born in Rome in 1960, the artist has toured throughout Europe, Japan, Canada, and Israel, as a soloist and as the conductor of his acclaimed ensemble, Concerto Italiano, noted for its superb performances of the madrigals of Monteverdi and Marenzio. In his program notes for the April 8 recital, Alessandrini writes,

 the "American Treasures" exhibition, and all of the reading rooms in that building: the Main Reading Room; the African and Middle Eastern, Asian, European, and Hispanic reading rooms; and the Folklife, Local History and Genealogy, Microform and Rare Book reading rooms. The Children's Literature Center will also be closed. Reading rooms and offices in the John Adams and James Madison buildings will remain open for their regular hours on April 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Juilliard String Quartet concert that was originally scheduled for 8 p.m. on April 23 will be held at the same time in the Coolidge Auditorium on Wednesday, April 21. Twelve winners in the third and final round of the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition have been announced. The program, in which Ameritech donated $2 million to the Library's National Digital Library (NDL) Program, has made awards to 33 institutions, including the 12 that will receive awards either alone or as part of a consortium this year.

Let’s watch Scary Movies Scream Horror Halloween shirt

 The conference will be held April 3-4, 2000, at the Library of Congress, and will include readings by the Special Consultants and the Poet Laureate. The tapes created for the Favorite Poem Project will become part of the Library of Congress's extensive Archive of Recorded Poetry and Literature, which includes readings by more than 2,000 poets and authors during the second half of the 20th century. Mr. Pinsky teaches in the graduate creative writing program at Boston University. His most recent publications are The Handbook of Heartbreak: 101 Poems of Lost Love and Sorrow and The Sounds of Poetry: A Brief Guide, which Mr. Pinsky describes as "a brief, plain book about how to hear poems." Mr. Pinsky's other works include the collections of his poetry Sadness And Happiness (1975); An Explanation of America (1980), awarded the Saxifrage Prize as the year's best volume of poetry from a small or university press;

 Juneteenth, Ellison's long-awaited second novel, which he considered unfinished at the time of his death, will be published in June by Random House under Mr. Callahan's editorship. In preparing Juneteenth, Mr. Callahan, who teaches at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore., drew heavily on the Library of Congress, the repository of Ellison's papers. Ellison's personal library also is at the Library of Congress.   Former Poet Laureate Robert Hass returns to the Library of Congress on Saturday, May 8, to moderate a program honoring the 1999 student winners of the fourth annual "River of Words" Environmental Poetry & Art Contest. The program, which features a display of artworks by their creators and poetry readings by the winning authors, will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building, 101 Independence Ave. S.E. It is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. Mr. Hass cofounded "River of Words" with Pamela Michael, who serves as project director.

Don’t be a pussy eat one shirt

 The New Century Chamber Orchestra, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, joins the foundations in commissioning Kurt Rohde to write a new work for string orchestra. Mr. Rohde received degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Curtis Institute, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Awards and commissions have come from the Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, the Yaddo, MacDowell, and Djerassi colonies, the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, and the American Flute Society. Mr. Rohde's works have been recorded on New Albion Records. Born in New York, Augusta Read Thomas is an associate professor on the composition faculty at the Eastman School of Music. She is commissioned to write a new work for the Ying String Quartet.
