 Stories from the Veterans History Project; Patriotic Melodies: Selections from I Hear America Singing; and Community Roots: Selections from the Local Legacies Project. Experiencing War (https://www.loc.gov/warstories) features selected stories from the Library's Veterans History Project in the American Folklife Center. Created by an act of Congress in 2000, the Veterans History Project provides veterans and the civilians who supported them the opportunity to record for posterity their wartime experiences. These poignant stories, which reflect the Web site's theme of "courage, patriotism and community," are told through video, audio and written personal accounts from 21 veterans and civilians. They include such stories as that of James Walsh, veteran of the Korean War, who describes the numbing cold and horrifying scenes he endured with the 25th Infantry.

 The American Folklife Center was created by Congress in 1976 and placed at the Library of Congress to "preserve and present American folklife" through programs of research, documentation, archival preservation, reference service, live performance, exhibition, public programs and training. The center includes the Archive of Folk Culture, which was established in 1928 and is now one of the largest collections of ethnographic material from the United States and around the world. Part of the Kennedy Center's Performing Arts for Everyone initiative, the Millennium Stage helps fulfill the center's mission to make performing arts widely accessible. Tickets are never required.   A highly respected author and sought-after lecturer and public speaker, Sanneh has written extensively on a number of religious and historical subjects. Among his many books are: "Abolitionists Abroad: American Blacks and the Making of Modern West Africa" (1999); "The Crown and the Turban: Muslims and West African Pluralism" (1997); and "Encountering the West: Christianity and the Global Cultural Process: The African Dimension," (1993). For his academic work, Sanneh was made Commandeur de l'Ordre National du Lion, Senegal's highest national honor. Through a generous endowment from John W. Kluge, the Library of Congress established the Kluge Center in 2000 to bring together the world's best thinkers to stimulate, energize and distill wisdom from the Library's rich resources and to interact with policymakers in Washington.

 The greatest space by far is devoted to World War II: the years leading up to the war, the war itself, and its aftermath. “An Age of Youth,” describes his early life as a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough, his school years, his first impressions of the United States, and his experiences as a soldier and war correspondent. In addition to Churchill’s early report card, this section includes photographs, posters, newspaper clippings and letters, including a letter Churchill wrote in pencil in 1898 to his cousin, the 9th Duke of Marlborough, about his participation in the Battle of Omdurman. This letter, unknown even to Churchill’s official biographer, has never been published or exhibited. “Stirring Affairs,” the second section, covers the years from 1900 to 1931,

His experience during the war helped to shape his belief that the hope of the world lay in Anglo-American unity, and he worked closely with American financier Bernard Baruch toward the end of the war to coordinate the war production of the United States and Great Britain. Prior to America’s entry into World War II, Churchill was back at his former post at the Admiralty and engaged in an unprecedented correspondence with President Roosevelt; these super-secret messages continued after Churchill became prime minister during the darkest days of the war.

 This presentation complements other American Memory collections, most notably “Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936-1938,” which contains transcripts of more than 2,300 interviews with ex-slaves. However, unlike the transcripts, which sometimes represent the collectors’ interpretations rather than verbatim reproductions, these recordings present the actual interview and offer the unique experience of hearing the ex-slaves’ voices with their various inflections and regional dialects. In addition to the recordings and transcripts, “Voices from the Days of Slavery” also includes biographies of many of the interviewers, including such notables and playwright Zora Neale Hurston and folklorists John and Ruby Lomax and their son Alan. A special presentation called “Faces and Voices from the Collection” and a related resources section are also available.
