The Rare Book and Special Collections Division hosts “Imagining the Extraordinary,” a symposium that will examine how creative illustrations have extended human understanding of science. The symposium is free and will be held at 9 a.m. on both days in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building, but registration is required.  In this talk, Dr. Dafna Zur, one of the very few North Korea scholars in the U.S.

 The book explores several themes and artistic platforms: The Golden Age of Illustration, Early Cartoonists, New Voices and New Narratives in Comics, Illustrations for Industry, Editorial Illustrators, Magazine Covers and Cartoons, and Political Cartoonists and Caricaturists. The book was made possible by support from the Alfred Bendiner Foundation, and the exhibition was made possible by support from the Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon. Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Library of Congress Literacy Awards, which are made possible through the generosity of philanthropist David M. Rubenstein.

Smith to serve a second term as the nation’s 22nd Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2018-2019. During her second year, Smith will expand her outreach efforts to rural communities and unveil a new anthology to be published in the fall.  “I am thrilled that Tracy K. Smith has accepted my invitation to continue sharing her poetry with the nation,” Hayden said.

  Newpoli performs folk songs and dance music from southern Italy, mainly from the regions of Campania and Puglia. They integrate a wide variety of styles such as, tarantella-pizzica, tammurriata, villanella and the Neapolitan canzone, encompassing music from the Middle Ages to the 19th century.  Most of the members are graduates of the Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory and are proficient on a wide range of folk and early instruments, including bagpipes, flutes, drums, accordions, viols and lutes.
