The Library of Congress's Web site for children and families, America's Library (www.americaslibrary.gov), has handled more than 250 million "hits" in the two years since it went online. The Web site, which debuted on the 200th birthday of the Library, April 24, 2000, is now averaging more than 24 million "hits" per month. "Meet Amazing Americans" introduces kids to some two dozen of the nation's most fascinating historical figures, such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Thomas Edison, Amelia Earhart, Harry Houdini and Frank Lloyd Wright. It also offers "Scavenger Hunt" and "Dynamite Presidents" games that encourage users to explore the Web site while learning about America's presidents. For example, players of "Dynamite Presidents" will learn that Thomas Jefferson is famous not only for writing the Declaration of Independence but also for selling his personal Library to the Library of Congress. "Jump Back in Time" lets users learn what happened on any day in history.

  The Law Library of Congress, which contains the largest collection of Afghanistan's laws in the world, was asked by the International Resources Group (a non- governmental organization) and the American Bar Association's Asia Law Initiative to locate a missing portion of this material that was unavailable elsewhere. This effort was part of a larger State Department initiative to reassemble the laws that were in effect before Taliban rule and Soviet occupation, including the 1964 constitution, and distribute approximately 1,000 copies to key institutions in Afghanistan. The material in the Law Library of Congress has been digitized as part of the Global Legal Information Network (GLIN), a cooperative, not-for-profit federation of government agencies or their designees that contribute national legal information to a database containing statutes, regulations and related legal materials in the vernacular. The database is accessible to member nations.

 A panel of six judges evaluated 146 entries from 28 design schools across the country. Awards went to six students and one faculty advisor. Lachezar Tsvetanov, a senior from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, won first place for his entry titled "Dook." He will be awarded $5,000 at the IDSA national conference in Monterey, Calif., July 20-23. His faculty advisor, Robert Brainard, will received a $2,000 cash award. "It was great to work on a product addressing the challenges faced by those whose needs are frequently overlooked," said Tsvetanov, a native of Sophia, Bulgaria. Tsvetanov's winning design resembles a book and opens to reveal a speaker and audio controls. He designed his entry for senior citizens who comprise half of the program's users and may be wary of new technology. He felt that the book format would be inconspicuous,

QuestionPoint software enables the patrons of subscribing libraries to submit questions at any time of the day or night through their library's Web site.  The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress presents legendary Washington, D.C., musician Chuck Brown on Wednesday, July 24, at noon, on the Neptune Plaza of the Jefferson Building, First and Independence Avenue, S.E.,Washington, D.C. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Jefferson Building's Coolidge Auditorium. The Jefferson Building is located close to Metro stops at Capitol South (orange and blue lines) and Union Station (red line). The free outdoor concert is the fifth in the center's new series, "Homegrown 2002: The Music of America," monthly presentations of traditional music and dance from April to November. Performances are drawn from communities across the United States and arranged with the help of state folklorists.

  The overall theme of the program is “Maintaining Democracy in an Unstable World.” Presidential scholar Robert P.Watson, the first speaker, will appear on Aug. 24 at the Spearfish Public Library in the northern Black Hills. He will present another talk on Aug. 25, preceding the evening lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore, then visit three other South Dakota towns including Mitchell, where he will join the other two speakers for a joint program at the Corn Palace. The other speakers are Ambassador George McGovern and sociologist Rosemarie Skaine, author of “The Women of Afghanistan Under the Taliban,” who will have visited three other South Dakota communities before the program in Mitchell. Extensive media coverage is being planned by the South Dakota Humanities Council, the home of the South Dakota Center for the Book – the national Center’s 47th and newest affiliate.
