In addition to the recordings and transcripts, “Voices from the Days of Slavery” also includes biographies of many of the interviewers, including such notables and playwright Zora Neale Hurston and folklorists John and Ruby Lomax and their son Alan. Sponsored by Merck, Sharp and Dohme International, it features the young West Virginia physician Dr. John Walden, who conducts a one-man inoculation program in the Amazon jungles of Ecuador, in an effort to save isolated tribes from extinction. Kravitt found this project very inspiring and felt privileged to be a part of it. Among the films acquired by the Library are "Portuguese Africa Today and Tomorrow," (1961), made for the Portuguese government; "Here's Help," made for the U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare; "The Involved Ones," made for the American Nurses' Association and sponsored by Schering; and "Around the World Holiday Kaper," made for the Dupont Fibers Division.

The legendary Reed was also Jabbour's mentor and taught him many tunes on the fiddle before he died in 1968 at the age of 84. LaPrelle hails from Rural Retreat, Va. She has been singing at fiddlers' conventions and other traditional musical gatherings since 1999. That year, at age 11, she was awarded second place in the Junior Folk Song competition at the Mount Airy (Va.) Fiddlers' Convention. She earned the same honor for the next two years. In 2002 amd 2003, she took the first place award in that competition. In 2003 she was also awarded third place in the Adult Folk Song Competition and second place in the Youth Competition at the Elk Creek (Va.) Fiddlers' Convention.

Lavishly illustrated, “The Cherry Blossom Festival: Sakura Celebration” (Bunker Hill Publishing, 2005) chronicles the history of the festival and the honoring of the ancient cherry tree, including its role today as an instrument of diplomacy and an eternal sign of the arrival of spring. The book includes the story of the tree’s cultivation and its significance in Japanese culture for more than 1,000 years. It explains how the cherry tree came to the United States for its eventual planting around the Tidal Basin, near the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.

Born in 1920 in New York City of Armenian parents, Alexander received his bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University in 1941 and a master of science degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. During World War II, he served in Europe on the staffs of General Eisenhower and General Bradley in the Psychological Warfare Division, after which he worked as public relations director for Sir Laurence Olivier on his films of Shakespeare’s “Henry V” and “Hamlet.” In 1950 Alexander organized broadcasts for the State Department to Soviet Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Tatarstan, after which he was appointed chief of the Armenian Service, where he remained for 10 years. He then transferred to the Foreign Service and pursued a career in diplomacy, serving in West Berlin, Budapest, Athens and East Berlin.

To date, more than 33,000 individuals have submitted stories to the collection. “Bound for Glory: America in Color, 1939-1943” is the first major exhibition of the little-known color images taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information (FSA/OWI). It will be on view from Sept. 8 through Nov. 26, in the South Gallery of the Great Hall of the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., Washington, D.C.   The “Song of America” tour featuring Thomas Hampson is the first in a series of events that will culminate in a broader exploration and celebration of “Creativity Across America.” The Library’s celebration of creativity in America will also include cultural educational programs such as “Poetry as Song” and displays of some of the Library’s rarely viewed and prized treasures along with discussions by curatorial experts. Trumbauer and Beiderbecke had worked together in the orchestras of Jean Goldkette, Adrian Rollini and Paul Whiteman. For a brief period in 1927, Trumbauer had his own recording contract with Okeh Records. Together with guitarist Eddie Lang and other members of the ensemble, Trumbauer and Beiderbecke recorded “Singin’ the blues,” which contains one of Beiderbecke’s greatest solos.

 The Bob Hope Gallery of American Entertainment, a permanent exhibition at the Library of Congress, will temporarily close, beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5, while construction related to the passageway from the Capitol Visitor Center is completed. Located on the ground floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First St. S.E., the gallery will reopen on Friday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Library of Congress acquired the Bob Hope Collection in 1998 and opened the exhibition, titled "Bob Hope and American Variety," in 2000. This celebration of Hope's career in the context of vaudeville in America looks at his achievements and contributions throughout the 20th century.
